Dr. Mweene Nseluke: From Sponsored Child to Top Medical Doctor
January 7, 2022
“My journey with ChildFund has been truly empowering. I’m deeply grateful for the support I have received. Coming from a humble background, I never imagined I would become a medical doctor, let alone be in charge of a district where my life began.”
Dr. Mweene Nseluke was born and raised in Chongwe’s Chainda community, where his chances of receiving an education were slim due to extreme poverty. He recalls the struggles of his early childhood: “Living in a mudbrick, grass-thatched house, I never thought I would have the opportunity to go to school, let alone reach this level in life.”
However, his life took a new turn when he was enrolled in ChildFund’s Sponsorship Program and assigned a sponsor. This sponsorship became the foundation of his educational journey, ensuring he had access to essential school supplies, tuition, and the encouragement needed to excel academically.

Dr. Nseluke successfully progressed through primary and secondary school with the support of ChildFund. However, after completing Grade 12, his sponsorship ended, and his family faced the daunting challenge of funding his medical education.
Determined to continue his studies, he sought additional support from ChildFund, which annually provides tertiary education assistance to over 500 young people. Through this program, he was able to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor at the University of Zambia.Today, Dr. Nseluke is not just a medical doctor, he serves as the Director of Health, overseeing multiple health centers within his district. He has come full circle, giving back to the very community where he grew up. His journey is a testament to the boundless potential within every child, waiting to be unlocked with the right support.
“I am who I am today because of ChildFund. Words cannot fully express my gratitude. From my early years in primary school to my completion of medical studies at the University of Zambia, ChildFund was there for me. Thank you, ChildFund.”Dr. Nseluka is always present whenever the Chongwe Child Development Agency needs his support. He speaks to young people and has remained a ChildFund brand ambassador in Chongwe District.
“I was serving as a project officer when Dr. Nseluka was just an enrolled child. I helped write and send his letters to his sponsor. Today, I’m proud to see him become our Director of Health here in Chongwe. He is always available when we need him to speak to young people or provide support to our programs,” said Green Makamo, Federation Manager for Chongwe Child Development Agency.
Chongwe Child Development Agency was the first office opened when ChildFund started operations in 1983 and over 10,000 children that have passed through the agency are living productive lives.

“Being a sponsored child meant that all my school requirements were taken care of by ChildFund. My only task was to study hard and work toward breaking the cycle of poverty.”
